Bringing home more than luggage

James, a 45-year-old university lecturer, presents complaining of feeling unwell for the past four days with fever, malaise, cough and sore eyes.


He developed a generalised rash yesterday evening that is not itchy.

James returned from Wales a week ago after a visiting tour of Cardiff University. His wife and  three children aged 13, 10 and eight are all well.

His medical history is unremarkable and he is on no medication. He thinks he has had all his childhood vaccinations but is not sure.

On examination, he looks miserable and has a temperature of 38.2°C. His eyes are red
