Case Study: Treating patella dislocation

Jessica is 21 years old. She twisted her right knee at netball, dislocating her patella laterally and her knee was stuck in a flexed position.

While being moved off the court, her knee straightened and the patella reduced. She presents to her GP the following morning limping and having difficulty bending and straightening her knee.

She has a moderate effusion in her right knee with a range of motion of 0-30° of flexion. The medial border of the patella is very tender.
