Food and fertility

A woman has been trying to conceive for three years without success. Could her diet be hampering her attempts to fall pregnant?

Jane presented to the dietitian for an assessment of her diet. She was undergoing IVF treatment and wanted to maximise her chances of pregnancy.

Jane had been trying to conceive for three years without success. She was about to start her second cycle of IVF.

Her husband had been assessed as not having male factor infertility. She attended the appointment alone.

History
In the past, Jane has had irritable bowel symptoms, including bloating, wind, nausea and significant abdominal discomfort.

She sought the advice of a naturopath, rather than consulting her GP, and the naturopath advised a diet free of milk, gluten and sugar, together with a variety of supplements.

Jane had followed this recommendation for the previous three months, and her gastrointestinal symptoms had significantly reduced.

Investigations
Jane's BMI was 24 and stable.
