Investigating a surfer's 'irritable hip'

A total hip replacement for persistant hip pain reveals an unexpected complication

Andrew, a 24-year-old carpenter, first presented a year ago because of persistent hip pain.

From a young age, Andrew had complained regularly about his “irritable hip” that came and went. It had worsened through his apprenticeship to the extent that he had had to give up his favourite recreation, surfing.

He described the pain as a deep ache in the groin, worsened by activity. There was always some pain there, and although he had seen multiple physiotherapists and chiropractors, it was not improving. In fact, it was getting steadily worse.
