Melanoma hidden by tattoo

The risk of tattoos concealing skins cancers has been highlighted by the case of a 76-year-old man who was oblivious to a burgeoning melanoma in his upper arm tattoo, Queensland dermatologists say.

The man had a history of skin cancer, and the 2cm-wide melanoma was only spotted when he presented to the dermatologist for a six-month skin checkup.  

Dermoscopy assessment was difficult because the tattoo ink interrupted and masked some of the signs for interpretation, his dermatologists said.
