Purple urine

US doctors have reported a rare case of purple urine that developed following a UTI.

An 83-year-old nursing home resident with bilateral nephrostomy tubes and urine bags was brought to the ED after one of his urine bags turned purple.
The nephrostomy tubes had been inserted several years earlier to allow his two kidneys to drain, when both of his ureters became obstructed by a bladder tumour.
The urine from the purple bag tested positive for Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whereas the urine from the clear bag did not, suggestive of a unilateral UTI.
