10 dos and don’ts for prenatal exercise

Few pregnant women exercise enough during pregnancy, research shows.

This is partly because they are uncertain about the types and amount of exercise that can and should be performed, according to the authors of a recent JAMA paper.

The following 10 points summarise current international guidelines for exercise during pregnancy.

  1. All pregnant women without obstetric and medical contraindications should be encouraged to follow the same exercise guidelines as adults who are not pregnant, which may include at least 20-30 minutes brisk walking on most days of the week.
