Recognising that a patient has a dependency problem with prescription drugs is not always easy, with many presenting as socially advantaged, well-educated people, with adequate social support and good jobs.

Typical requests and complaints to be aware of include:

  1. Aggressively complaining about the need for a drug
  2. Asking for specific drugs by name
  3. Asking for brand names
  4. Requesting to have the dose increased
  5. Claiming multiple allergies to alternative drugs
  6. Anger or irritability when questioned closely about symptoms such as pain
