$21.3m to help bridge the health gap

Indigenous Health Minister Warren Snowdon said the 36 new projects were in addition to 38 similar projects funded by the Commonwealth last year.

The programs included cooking lessons for new mothers, exercise programs, and “culturally appropriate” marketing aimed at cutting smoking rates.

“Two-thirds of the gap in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and the wider Australian population can be attributed to largely preventable chronic diseases,” Mr Snowdon said in a statement.
