5 new 'do not do' rheumatology procedures

Shoulder injections and knee arthroscopies are on the blacklist

Rheumatologists have picked five low-value interventions that should be avoided as part of the Choosing Wisely Australia campaign.


The recommendations include curbing the use of ultrasound-guided injections into the subacromial space for shoulder pain, which rheumatologists say has increased following the government’s 2009 removal of GP Medicare items for landmark-guided injections.

The recommendations, based on submissions from 179 members of the Australian Rheumatology Association, are as follows:
