GP clinics are being urged to adopt five strategies that new research shows are the key to increasing flu vaccination uptake (see below).
As this year’s supplies of quadrivalent vaccine begin to arrive in GP clinics, a study has shown that appointing one staff member as the ‘flu vaccine lead’ to co-ordinate the practice’s immunisation program is instrumental in ensuring high uptake.
Other key features of practices with high flu vaccine uptake are setting vaccination targets, targeting eligible patients with phone calls and being proactive with opportunistic vaccination, according to the study of 20 GP practices in the UK.
Having a prearranged plan and using promotional techniques for flu vaccine are other features that distinguish high-achieving practices, the study shows.
