Individual doctors have a professional responsibility to take care of themselves to avoid burnout, argues a US professor of medicine in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

A common problem among doctors across all specialties, Dr Tait Shanafelt and colleagues describe burnout as “a syndrome of exhaustion, cynicism and decreased effectiveness at work”.
