Abortion access needs law reform, skills
Accurate data is not collected but, anecdotally, access in certain states is challenging due to limited public service provision.
In general, rural women are poorly served, as the majority of private abortion services are located in the capital cities and in only a small number of clinics in major regional centres.
Until recently, surgical abortion was the only method available in Australia. Greater access to medical abortion was possible when mifepristone was registered in Australia in 2012 (under the trade name Mifepristone Linepharma).2
