Abortion debate: the right to refuse referral

The debate over Victorian state laws that demand conscientious objectors to abortion to refer patients seeking terminations continues. The laws detailed in section 8 of abortion reforms introduced in 2008 apply to all doctors working in the state.

The campaign group Doctors 4 Freedom of Conscience claims the laws - which are currently before parliament in Tasmania - say they breach the human rights of doctors not to take part in treatments they find morally objectionable. The
