Academic's death blamed on health system failure

The family of a mentally ill man who bludgeoned to death his stepfather – the leading health economist Professor Gavin Mooney — has blamed failures by WA’s health system for the tragedy.

Professor Mooney, who had worked at Curtin University in WA, and his wife, Dr Delys Weston, were killed by Nicolau Soares with a hammer and block-splitter at their southern Tasmanian property in December 2012.

On Thursday, Mr Soares was found not guilty of the crime on the grounds of insanity by a Tasmanian Supreme Court jury after a trial lasting three
