Accessing Medicare numbers may get harder

The federal government may make it harder for doctors to access Medicare numbers after patients’ card numbers were sold on the dark web.  

The government has not identified who is responsible, but reports suggest that the darknet trader may have got the numbers from a doctor or a healthcare professional with access to an online database of Medicare numbers.

Former public service chief Peter Shergold will now conduct a review of how doctors check a Medicare number without a card.
