Acne treatment shows room for improvement
GPs are overprescribing antibiotics for acne and underusing topical retinoids.
At least, that’s the case in the UK, where research shows many GPs are failing to follow the guidelines.
There is also evidence to suggest scope for improvement in the management of acne among Australian doctors.
International best practice dictates doxycycline as the agent of first choice and that therapy be limited to 3-6 months. Prescribing concomitant topical retinoids is recommended for all patients.
