ACT nurse clinic expansion draws AMA fire

AMA vice president Dr Geoffrey Dobb said fragmentation of the health system “does nobody any favours”.

“We need better integration of our health system, not money put into distractions from the main game,” Dr Dobb said.

“This is very misguided.”

The ACT branch of the AMA yesterday called on the territory government to fund nurses in established general practices instead of expanding the clinic.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher announced the nurse-led model, established with the creation of the existing centre last year, would be expanded to Belconnen and Tuggeranong.

“Since [2010] the centre has treated more than 15,000 people filling a gap in the delivery of free, extended hours healthcare in Canberra,” Ms Gallagher said.
