Action required now to combat expected shortfalls

The report, released by Health Workforce Australia late last month, projected the recent growth in medical student numbers would outpace the growth in postgraduate training opportunities if current trends continued.

AMA president Dr Steve Hambleton said with 3700 students expected to be graduating each year by 2014, urgent action was required to open the training bottleneck.

“According to the report, in 2016 there will be 3867 doctors who require a first year advanced specialist training place, whereas the most recent data shows that there are currently only 2817 positions available,” he said.
