The addictive nature of tanning

People who insist on sunbaking despite knowing the risks may be genetically predisposed to ultraviolet light, a study shows.

Researchers believe they may carry a particular gene that makes them susceptible to, or even dependent on tanning.

“A suggested mechanism for tanning dependence involved UV-induced p53 protein expression, which results in increased levels of beta-endorphin and adrenocorticotrophic hormone,” they write in Experimental Dermatology.
