After-hours GP claimed 'urgent' rebates for treating sore throats

An after-hours doctor will have to pay back more than $384,000 in rebates after claiming ‘urgent’ MBS items for treating blocked noses, sore throats and coughs.

The GP, who has not been identified, was prosecuted by the Professional Services Review (PSR) for claims made while working for a medical deputising service.

His records reveal he claimed MBS items 597, worth $129.80, or item 599, worth $153, for consults including:

  • “Sore throat, cough, sore ears, nasal congestion”
  • “Headache, nausea, vomiting”
  • “Irritable, pulling left ear”
