After-hours GPs acting as ‘mobile pharmacists’

An after-hours care service that has doctors moonlighting as mobile pharmacists has come under fire from some of its own GPs.

Six months ago, one of Australia's largest after-hours companies — the National Home Doctor Service (NHDS) — rolled out a new scheme where patients can obtain a full course of medications from visiting doctors called out on urgent request.

Patients pay an annual subscription of $59, which allows them to receive unlimited bulk-billed home visits and a full course of some medications, if they are needed.
