Alarm as antibiotic of last resort runs out

A shortage of vancomycin, the antibiotic of last resort for superbug infections, has caused alarm among infectious disease specialists.

Patients’ lives may be at risk because of shortages of the intravenous infusion form of the antibiotic expected until February 2017, says Professor Peter Collignon, professor of microbiology at the Australian National University medical school in Canberra.
