Alprazolam prescribing falls, but not far enough

Switching alprazolam to a Schedule 8 medicine has cut use but prescribing rates are still too high, a GP has told an addiction medicine conference.

PBS prescriptions for the popular 2mg dose of alprazolam declined from about 7000-10,000 per month in 2013 to 5000 per month after the drug was rescheduled in February 2014 due to concerns over abuse, according to Melbourne GP and benzodiazepine researcher Dr Hester Wilson.
