AMA: GPs a better bet than nurses for endoscopies

Nurses should be trained to perform the 170,000 “less complex” endoscopies gastroenterologists and other specialists currently do annually, says a new report from the Grattan Institute.

But the AMA disagrees. Its president Dr Steve Hambleton said specialist nurses would not have the general medical knowledge to deal with certain complications.

Having GPs perform endoscopies would be more sensible than training nurses, he said.
