AMA reminder of unique doctor role in healthcare
THE AMA has reasserted what most doctors already know – no other medical professional can provide a substitute for their training, knowledge and judgement.
The timely reminder was included in a recently released AMA position statement on the role of the doctor.
The position statement comes as the association lobbies to preserve doctors’ authority amid sweeping health reform and the rise of team-based care arrangements.
The statement describes doctor education and training as “highly complex and rigorous”, noting that as a result confidence in the profession “cannot be substituted by on-the-job exposure by other health practitioners”.
It also stresses the high level of trust patients have in doctors, as well as doctors’ ability to “manage complexity and risk in situations that can be characterised by uncertainty”.
