The AMA's new president has warned the “very survival” of general practice is at stake because of the systematic starvation of funding.

Melbourne GP Dr Tony Bartone took the reins on Sunday, replacing Dr Michael Gannon after two years at the helm.

“Our health minister [Greg Hunt] needs to understand the time for rhetoric is over,” Dr Bartone told delegates at the AMA national conference in Canberra.
