Anaesthesia study bites researchers on the bum

Avoiding general anaesthesia does not cut the risk of postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD), according to an Australian trial.

It is likely that other factors like inflammatory response to surgery and hospitalisation are more important in POCD, according to the study published in the British Journal of Anaesthesia.

One problem in attributing POCD to general anaesthesia has been that it happens at the same time as the surgery, making it
