Anaesthetist calls for better pain management
Too many doctors rely on strong analgesics rather than a collaborative approach to pain management, says a Sydney anaesthetist.
“Chronic pain needs to be managed like other chronic conditions,” says Professor Michael Nicholas, of the University of Sydney’s Pain Management Research Institute.
“This involves the active engagement of the patient rather than the doctor solving it all alone. There must be a collaborative approach between the doctor and the patient to work on shared goals and responsibilities.”
