Anticoagulants overprescribed for atrial fibrillation: study

Many patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) are inappropriately receiving oral anticoagulants despite guidelines discouraging their use in those at low risk of stroke, US researchers have found.

Their study of nearly 11,000 patients with AF and low risk of stroke found one quarter were being prescribed the therapy, contrary to 2014 American College of Cardiology guidelines discouraging their use in patients who do not have established risk factors for stroke.
