Antivirals provide little benefit for flu: Cochrane

The review has reignited debate over the validity of expensive stockpiles of Tamiflu kept by governments and the best response in the event of an outbreak or pandemic.

According to the review, the drug shortens the symptoms of influenza but only by an average time of between eight and 25 hours, and there is no evidence it reduces hospital admissions or complications.

It also found it was unproven that Tamiflu prevents people from contracting influenza and transmitting it to others.
