Aussie doctors face checks after fake doctor jailed in UK

The change comes after a Kiwi med school drop-out practised as a psychiatrist for 20 years

Around 3000 Australian and other Commonwealth-trained doctors working in the UK will have their credentials checked after a New Zealand med school drop-out practised as a psychiatrist for more than 20 years.

The urgent review will apply to doctors who were added to the UK's medical register before 2003, when an exemption to the Medical Act allowed doctors from certain Commonwealth countries to bypass an assessment of their medical skills and knowledge.

However, it has emerged that the exemption allowed Zholia Alemi to work as a psychiatrist in the UK for 23 years despite dropping out of medical school after failing her first year, the BMJ reports.
