Aussies break heart transplant record

Australian specialists believe they have broken a world record for the length of time a heart has been out of the body before a successful transplant.

The team from the Royal Perth Hospital achieved this with a pioneering new warm organ preservation technique, which they report improves graft function, expanding the potential donor pool and extending the transport window for what is one of the world’s most isolated cities.

With the new method the heart is placed on a rig and perfused with warm, oxygenated donor blood, delivered directly to the aortic root and
