Australia urged to consider 'opt-out' organ donation

Inquiry says the scheme could reduce human organ trafficking and transplant tourism

The Australian government has been urged to consider changing the organ donation system to an ‘opt-out’ scheme to combat the rise of human organ trafficking and transplant tourism.

A parliamentary inquiry investigating the issue has also recommended introducing a mandatory reporting scheme for doctors with “any knowledge or reasonable suspicion” their patient had received a commercial transplant or one from a non-consenting donor.
