Australia's flagging fertility rates
Australia’s fertility rate continues to hover below replacement level, the latest figures show.
In 2014, the total fertility rate in Australia was 1.8 babies per woman, making it slightly lower than the replacement rate of 2.1 babies per woman (see interactive graph below).
The replacement rate refers to the average number of babies required to replace a woman and her partner, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
