Axing locums not the answer: AMA

Axing locum doctors as part of a $775 million cost-cutting agenda in NSW will leave holes in patient care, a leading doctor warns.

The NSW Health Minister, Jillian Skinner, suggested earlier this month that locum doctors could be targeted in labour cuts that will be implemented over the next four years, with local health districts given control over how they achieve the savings.

No nurse positions would be cut, she said, but added that the savings could be achieved instead through “new models of care, better distribution of staff, less reliance on locums
