Baby deaths spark coronial recommendation to ban unregistered midwives

All three babies were delivered via home births involving former midwife Lisa Barrett and each birth involved complications; one was a large baby, one a breech birth and the third was one of twins.

In his findings on Wednesday South Australian deputy coroner Anthony Schapel said it was a "matter of certainty" that the babies would have lived if their mothers had elected to undergo a caesarean section.

Mr Schapel said even without such intervention the babies may have survived if their births had occurred in hospital rather than at home.
