Ban new provider numbers in GP glut areas, says report

A new report claims an oversupply of GPs is to blame for the nation’s ballooning Medicare bill, arguing the Federal Government should stop granting provider numbers in glut areas.

The paper, published by the Australian Population Research Institute (TAPRI) on Wednesday, argues that since 2004, government policy to recruit IMGs and increase medical degree places to address undersupply has created a glut of doctors.
