Bariatric patients need special attention

Bariatric surgery patients require lifelong follow-up to ensure they are not nutritionally deficient and GPs are well placed to flag these patients for regular monitoring, an obesity expert says.

“Nutritional issues are a critical downside to bariatric surgery and should be front of mind whenever any health professional interacts with a patient even 20 years down the track,” according to Professor John Dixon, Head of Clinical Obesity Research at Baker IDI.
