Big fall in number of IMGs on limited registration

The number of IMGs working on limited registration in areas of need has dropped dramatically in the past five years.

The health system’s dependence on foreign doctors has long been a vexed ethical issue — particularly with claims Australia has attracted doctors from countries in greater need of their skills.

According to the Medical Board of Australia, there were 6221 IMGs on limited registration in 2011, but that figure dropped to 3455 in June last year.

The number of IMGs on limited registration in areas of need has also fallen from 2335 to 1261.

However, it is
