Biologic uncertainty

Rheumatoid arthritis patients have a substantially higher risk of non-melanoma skin cancer and biologic treatment further adds to this risk, according to Swedish research.

The data linkage study found a nearly doubled risk of squamous cell carcinoma in biologic-naïve patients, compared with matched controls.

But for patients taking an anti-TNF biologic, the risk went up a further 30%.

The researchers also found a 22% higher risk of basal cell carcinoma in biologic-naïve patients. This risk was further increased with TNF inhibitors, but not to a statistically
