Sudden infant death syndrome specialists have warned of the potential dangers of putting babies to bed in a cardboard box, a practice that has been promoted as a safe alternative to a cot or bassinet.

The cardboard baby box is based on a Finnish tradition, dating back to the 1930s, of giving pregnant women a box of free infant care items, including a mattress that fits into the bottom of the box to make a makeshift bed.
