Breast screening backlash hits Switzerland

The Swiss Medical Board has recommended no further systematic mammography screening programs be implemented in the country and existing ones wound back.

This controversial move comes off the back of a report released earlier this month which showed screening reduced mortality only slightly, with one to two fewer women dying of breast cancer per thousand screened.

But this small benefit was offset by the problem of overdiagnosis, which affected around 100 women per thousand screened.
