Calcium increases CVD risk for men

Taking large amounts of calcium supplements increases the risk of cardiovascular death in men but "perplexingly" not in women, new research concludes.

The study of almost 400,000 Americans aged 50-71, followed for 12 years on average, found that men taking more than 1000mg of calcium per day were 20% more likely to die from CVD than men not taking supplements.

The findings are likely to stoke a debate which has been raging for the past three years over the cardiovascular safety of calcium
