Call to boycott Pfizer goes unheeded by GPs

AN APPEAL for GPs to boycott Pfizer over its decision to distribute products direct to pharmacies appeared to have fallen on deaf ears, as the dispute between the drug manufacturer and wholesalers heated up last week.

Almost 90% of 217 pharmacists polled by industry-led advocacy group National Pharmaceutical Services Association – whose membership comprises Sigma Pharmaceuticals and Symbion Pharmacy Services – called for GPs to avoid prescribing Pfizer products when an alternative was available.

The reaction from doctors was summed up by Queensland GP Dr Tim Shannon, who told MO: “It just won’t happen.”

“Good on Pfizer – the wholesalers have a monopoly,” Dr Shannon said.

However, Queensland GP Dr Peter Stephenson told MO that while he would prefer not to follow through, he would seriously consider the boycott.
