Call for major rethink on bowel screening

Experts are calling for a major overhaul of the National Bowel Cancer Screening Program after a report shows Australians are now less likely to participate than they were three years ago.

Only 35% of 930,000 people invited to take part in the program in 2011/12 returned a completed faecal occult blood test for analysis, according to the latest Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data.

This participation rate is 3% lower than for the previous
