Call for MBS-PBS safety net merger in May Budget

Prime Minister Julia Gillard has refused to rule out cutting back the Medicare safety net - introduced by opposition leader Tony Abbott when he was health minister - as her government sticks to its pledge of announcing a Budget surplus for next financial year.

While refusing to comment on speculation the May budget will bring changes to the safety net, Ms Gillard told reporters yesterday her government would always 'act to make sure taxpayers get value for money'.
