Call to record smoking on death certificates

The call came after a South African study found a correlation between people of mixed race and high rates of smoking-related mortality.

The authors collected and analysed 481,640 South African death notifications at ages 35—74 from 1999 to 2007 including information about age, sex, population group, education, underlying disease and whether the person smoked in the past.

In the mixed race group, smoking prevalence was high and smokers had a 50% higher overall mortality than otherwise
