Call to screen arthritis patients for AF

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis should be screened for atrial fibrillation annually, experts say, in light of new findings linking the disease to an increased risk of AF and stroke.

In a study of more than four million people, researchers found those with rheumatoid arthritis faced a 40% increased risk of AF compared with the general population, over the 13-year follow-up period.

This corresponded to one new case of AF per 12 rheumatoid arthritis patients followed for 10 years
