Can a curry spice alleviate arthritis symptoms?

Turmeric extract can be “cautiously” recommended for treating pain and inflammation in arthritis, say the authors of a systematic review.

Their analysis of eight randomised trials show that 8-12 weeks of turmeric extracts (typically 1000mg/day of curcumin) can significantly reduce pain and inflammation-related symptoms.

Lower doses were also found to be effective in some studies.

The trials were mostly conducted in patients with osteoarthritis and used either the PVAS or WOMAC scores to measure pain, or both.
